Mohs Surgery

Forging the Path in Skin Cancer Treatment

When facing a skin cancer diagnosis, your choice of treatment plays a crucial role in ensuring your best recovery. Mohs surgery, pioneered by Dr. Frederic Mohs, is often the best choice for cancers on the face, hands, and other critical areas. This innovative technique has the highest cure rate, and emphasizes minimal disruption of the surrounding healthy skin.

How Does the Procedure Work?

Dr. Barlow will carefully examine the skin cancer, marking its dimensions. To ensure your comfort, our surgical team administers anesthesia. The surgeon then removes a section of skin just around the identified cancer site. Microscopic analysis is conducted to confirm the complete removal of cancer. If there is cancer left after the first layer, this process continues, with thin layers of tissue being removed until there are no more cancer cells at the edges. Our surgical team will provide guidance on wound care and expert recovery advice.

Is Mohs Surgery Right for You?

The Mohs procedure might be the right choice for you for several reasons:

Mohs surgery has the highest cure rate among available treatments for common skin cancers.

This method has been successfully used for many decades to treat basal and squamous cell carcinomas, and more recently, melanoma, thanks to special lab stains.

Mohs surgery is renowned for preserving as much healthy skin as possible while selectively removing cancer cells.

Mohs surgery involves microscopic examination, making it ideal for recurrent, large, or aggressive skin cancers.
