Personalized Path to Relief

Contact dermatitis, a common skin condition, can be incredibly uncomfortable and disruptive to daily life. It occurs when skin reacts to a substance it comes in contact with, which can include natural objects like poison ivy or metals, household detergents, and cosmetics. This can result in redness, itching, and sometimes even blisters. If you’re suffering, Deseret Dermatology can help treat and prevent contact dermatitis to improve your quality of life.

Our personalized treatment plans emphasize avoidance training and proven itch relief therapy. In addition to treating rashes, we also conduct allergy patch tests to ensure your diagnosis is accurate and your treatment effective.

FAQs

Contact dermatitis is a skin condition caused by contact with allergens or irritants. Common triggers include soaps, cosmetics, plants like poison ivy, and metals such as nickel. Irritant dermatitis might occur right away, but allergic dermatitis usually doesn’t flare for days after touching the substance, making it hard to identify the source.

Common skin allergy triggers include metals, preservatives in wet wipes, chemicals in cosmetic products, hair dyes, clothing dyes, fragrances, and essential oils.

An allergy patch test, also known as patch testing or contact allergen testing, is a diagnostic procedure used to identify substances (allergens) that may cause an allergic skin reaction. It helps determine the specific triggers of contact dermatitis or allergic skin conditions. Patches with small amounts of common allergy triggers are taped to your skin, usually on the back, for 48 hours, then examined for early reactions. The skin is checked again 48 hours later to see if any additional reaction occurs. If you have repeated rashes and aren’t sure of the cause, an allergy patch can help you better understand your skin.
